Dental bridges are used to replace or ‘bridge’ gaps left by one or more teeth that are missing due to trauma or decay. Here at Woodlane Family & Cosmetic Dentistry installing dental bridges will take 2 or more visits and require the patient to have strong bone support in the jaw and great oral health. TYPES OF BRIDGES
Traditional dental bridges are made up of fake teeth that are held in place by abutments or dental crowns. Maryland Bridges requires fusing of pontic or fake teeth with metal bands, which are then cemented to the abutment teeth using resin cement. Cantilever Bridges are recommended for situations where only one side of the missing tooth has natural teeth. The only difference between cantilever bridges and traditional bridges is that the former is attached on one side.
HOW TO CARE FOR DENTAL BRIDGES
Excellent oral hygiene is an absolute must for all of the different types of dental bridges. According to The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, gum disease and tooth decay are more likely in people who have dental bridges which utilise abutment teeth. This is due to the fact that it is easier for food particles to get stuck in the dental bridge. Using a soft bristled toothbrush to regularly brush your teeth is vital because of this. Prevention of gingivitis, plaque and tartar build up can be assisted by the use of a dentist recommended toothpaste.
